NORMAN, Okla. -- Abi Olajuwon was last off the bench Tuesday night, but her contributions were first class.
The senior center scored 17 points and spurred Oklahoma's offense as the Sooners defeated Oklahoma Christian, 109-55, in the team's exhibition finale Tuesday night at the Lloyd Noble Center.
"We just talked about me focusing on one thing and for me it was running and posting up on the man and not posting up on a place," Olajuwon said, "but finding someone and getting position on them.
"She was fantastic," OU head coach Sherri Coale said. "I think that she felt comfortable tonight and I think that she got a chance to see the defense and what she could take advantage of."
The 6-foot-3 Olajuwon, who finished the night 8-for-11 from the field, was an easy target for the Sooner guards, who finished with 20 assists.
"I front the player," Olajuwon said. "I don't turn around and look for jump shots. I mainly play with my back to the basket so I have to find the position. If that man is under the basket that gives me an easy opportunity to make a lay-up."
Nyeshia Stevenson added 17 points and Danielle Robinson scored 15, including 3 from her first collegiate, though unofficial, 3-point make of her career.
Balanced scoring and aggressive defense kept the Sooners in command after some early trading of baskets. OU set the pace with a 52-28 halftime advantage and forced a total of 37 Lady Eagle turnovers.
Whitney Hand didn't find her regular shooting touch, going 5-for-14, but still managed 13 points and counted a game-high seven steals.
Carlee Roethlisberger started the game scoring Oklahoma's first points and finished with 10 total.
Lyndsey Cloman was perfect from the field with 10 points. The freshman hit all three field goals, including a late 3 caused off a steal in transition.
Joanna McFarland and Lauren Willis each added eight points.
The frontcourt offense was a definite boost for a team that looks to replace one of the most dominant post duos in college basketball history in Ashley and Courtney Paris.
According to the Sooners, who begin the regular season Friday at home against Mercer, the sky is the limit for Olajuwon this season.
Said Danielle Robinson: "I definitely see improvement and I have seen it the last three years in practice and when Abi wants to score, Abi will score. When she is posting on a player and not a place it is definitely her strong point and when she does that she is going to score."
