XC: Men Move Up To No. 2 in Midwest Region

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men's cross country team moved up one spot to No. 2 Monday in the Midwest Region ranking provided by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Rankings (USTFCCCA).

The Sooners currently trail Big 12 rival Oklahoma State, who holds the No. 1 rank in the Midwest region. Iowa State comes in right behind the Sooners at No. 3, falling one spot from last week. Tulsa, who was previously ranked No. 5 in the region, moved up a spot to No.4, with the University of Minnesota rounding out the top-five.

The Sooners are coming off their second straight second-place finish against top-25 teams, after this weekend's race at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.

“The team ran a very disciplined race and I thought we executed our race plans extremely well. This was a good effort to wrap up the non-championship part of our schedule. I would hope our performance would give us momentum and confidence as we head towards the Big 12 Championship in two weeks,” said University of Oklahoma head coach Martin Smith.

The Sooners are currently ranked No. 23 nationally by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Rankings (USTFCCCA); week four rankings will be released Tuesday.

Saturday's action closes out the regular-season portion of the 2009 Oklahoma cross country season. The Sooners now turn their attention to the post-season, beginning with the Big 12 Championships on Oct. 31 in Columbia, Mo.
