Oklahoma Postgame Notes

January 27, 2009 | Men's Basketball

Jan. 27, 2009

• Oklahoma's 89-81 win at Oklahoma State was its fourth straight over the Cowboys, sixth in the last seven meetings and seventh in the last nine. OU, which never trailed on the night, leads the overall series 124-89.

• The victory was OU's second straight in Stillwater and third there in the last four years.

• The Sooners, who have just one loss on the season, became the first team in the country to reach 20 wins. They are now 6-0 in Big 12 play.

• Only one other OU team has ever posted as many wins through the first 21 games (the 1985-86 team also started its season 20-1).

• Blake Griffin finished with 26 points, 19 rebounds and three assists. He was 9-for-11 from the field and 8-for-13 from the free throw line. Twelve of his free throw attempts came in the second half.

• The double-double for Griffin was his nation-leading 17th of the year. He registered his 10th game this year of at least 20 points and 15 rebounds, the most of any player since the start of the 1996-97 season (Wake Forest's Tim Duncan in 1996-97 and Louisiana Tech's Paul Millsap in 2005-06 had nine).

• Griffin outrebounded Oklahoma State by himself. OSU finished with 18 rebounds. Griffin had half of OU's 38 boards.

• Griffin has now recorded 11 games of at least three assists this season. He is averaging 2.5 handouts per game, the most among Big 12 players who stand at least 6-5.

• Austin Johnson scored a career-high 22 points with the help of 5-for-8 3-point shooting. His fourth trey came with 6:54 remaining and after OSU had cut OU's 14-point lead to one (64-63). The Sooners led by at least three the rest of the way.

• Oklahoma is 21-1 over the last two seasons when Johnson scores in double figures.

• Johnson is averaging 14.2 points and shooting .500 (15-for-30) from 3-point range in conference play. He averaged 6.6 points per non-conference contest.

• Junior Juan Pattillo, who came out of his redshirt for the Jan. 12 Texas game, came off the bench to score 12 points and grab three boards in 23 minutes tonight. Pattillo, who had nine points and three rebounds Saturday against Baylor, played only two minutes each against Texas and Texas A&M. He did not play against Nebraska.

• Pattillo was 4-for-6 from the field (three dunks) and hit all four of his free throws.

• OU shot .580 from the field for the game, just two days after posting a season-high .583 versus Baylor. The Sooners are now shooting .485 on the season. The last time they shot a higher percentage for an entire season was in 1988-89 (.491).

• OU head coach Jeff Capel is now 4-1 against Oklahoma State.

• The Sooners play at Iowa State on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CST (televised on the Big 12 Network).
