NORMAN, Okla. — One Oklahoma program record fell and another was extended as three OU athletes competed in the throws portion of the Oklahoma Christian Indoor Invitational Saturday in the Mosier Indoor Facility in Norman. Junior K.P. Singh shattered the Oklahoma program record in the men's weight throw while Mikaela Johansson extended her women's record in the event.
Singh hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the competition, tossing the 35-pound weight a distance of 65 feet and 7 inches (19.99 meters) to top the previous OU record of 56-10.25 (17.33) set by Nils Oliveto in 1999. Singh's distance was more than 15 feet further than the event's second-place finisher.
On the women's side, Johansson extended her personal best and program record set last year in the weight throw with a toss of 55-3.75 (16.86) to capture top honors in the event.
Amy Backel and Johansson then finished first and second, respectively, in the women's shot put as each recorded personal bests in the event. Backel's throw of 49-6.25 (15.09) took top honors followed by Johansson's 46-11.75 (14.32). Backel's toss moved the junior up to No. 3 on the OU all-time performance list for the event.
OU returns home for its next action on Saturday, hosting the ninth annual J.D. Martin Duals. Action is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
