OKC Celebrates Sam Bradford Day

NORMAN, Okla. -- Mayor Mick Cornett proclaimed January 13, 2009, as "Sam Bradford Day" in Oklahoma City. OU's Heisman Trophy winner joined his parents, Kent and Martha, in the mayor's office for the announcement.

The full proclamation follows:

WHEREAS, on December 13, 2008, Sam Bradford became the first Oklahoma City citizen to win the Heisman Trophy, college football's highest individual honor; and

WHEREAS, on December 16, 2008, Sam Bradford became the first Associated Press First Team All American from Oklahoma City in a decade; and

WHEREAS, Sam Bradford led his team, the University of Oklahoma Sooners, to the 2009 national championship game in Miami, Florida; and

WHEREAS, on November 8, 1987, in Oklahoma City, Kent and Martha Bradford welcomed their only child, Samuel Jacob, into the world; and

WHEREAS, in 2006, Sam graduated from Putnam City North High School in Oklahoma City; where he was the starting quarterback for the Panthers for three years, and also played basketball and golf; where he finished in the top ten percent of his class with a 4.2 grade point average; and

WHEREAS, the Sooners signed Sam in 2006 and in August 2007 the redshirt freshman was named the starter and quickly began breaking records; including the records for touchdown passes in a season and a career; and

WHEREAS, Sam passed for 4,464 yards and 48 touchdowns his sophomore season; and

WHEREAS, Sam led the Sooners to the 2007 and 2008 Big XII championships; and

WHEREAS, everyone around Sam says you can take away all the accolades and still before you would stand an all-around great person, the young man Kent and Martha Bradford raised him to be.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICK CORNETT, Mayor of The City of Oklahoma City, do hereby proclaim January 13, 2009 as "SAM BRADFORD DAY" in Oklahoma City.
