Griffin Nabs Another Big 12 Award

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's Blake Griffin has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.  Griffin picked up the honor today after he helped the Sooners to wins over Maryland Eastern Shore and Kansas State last week.

The sophomore forward from Oklahoma City averaged 24.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 blocked shots while shooting .579 from the field (22-for-38).

In the 100-64 win over Maryland Eastern Shore, the 6-10, 251-pounder played just 22 minutes but still recorded 20 points, 16 rebounds, two assists and a career-high-tying four blocks.  He responded with 29 points, 15 boards and three assists in the 61-53 victory at Kansas State.  His 13 field goals against the Wildcats were one shy of his career high.

Griffin, whose two double-doubles last week gave him a nation-leading 13 on the year, now leads the Big 12 in scoring (22.5 ppg), rebounding (14.1 rpg) and field goal percentage (.647) while ranking fourth in blocked shots (1.4 bpg) and eighth in steals (1.6 spg).  The 6-10 sophomore also averages 2.5 assists per contest, more than any other league player taller than 6-5.  He has recorded at least two assists in 13 of 16 games.

The Big 12 coaches' unanimous choice as league preseason player of the year, Griffin has scored in double figures in all 16 games this year and has netted at least 20 points on 11 occasions.

The four Big 12 player awards for Griffin this year ties for the sixth most in conference history and the most for an Oklahoma player in a single season.  With his two honors last year, Griffin has been named Big 12 Player of the Week six times.

Iowa State sophomore guard Lucca Staiger was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week after averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 assists.

Griffin and the sixth-ranked Sooners, who are off to their best start (15-1) in 23 years, host seventh-ranked Texas (12-3) tonight at 8.
