LUBBOCK, Texas - The University of Oklahoma women's volleyball team opened Big 12 play Friday evening with a 3-2 win over Texas Tech. In the nightcap of the Red Raider Round Up, the Sooners (3-4, 1-0 Big 12) dropped the first set 15-25 before bouncing back to win the second and third sets, 25-20 and 27-25, respectively. The Red Raiders (3-5, 0-1 Big 12) took set four 25-17 but the Sooners got the win 15-10 in the deciding set to take the match.
“It was a good win for us,” said OU head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We finally settled down in the fifth set and played very well.”
Redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu led OU with 16 kills on the evening. Ekwerekwu added a career-high nine blocks on the evening. Her six block assists tie a career-high for the Arlington, Texas native. Freshman Caitlin Higgins found her way into the scoring column, tallying 14 kills for the Sooners. She matched a season-high with two service aces and set a new season-high with 13 digs. With the 14 kills and 13 digs, Higgins recorded her second double-double of the season.
Freshman Brianne Barker added a season-high 42 assists for OU. On the defensive side, junior Taylor Harbster added 13 digs, while Barker added 10. Sophomore Chrissy Disarro added five blocks on the evening. As a team, the Sooners out-blocked the Red Raiders, 14-8.
OU continues action in the Red Raider Round Up Saturday morning against TCU at 11 a.m. and closes out the tournament on Sunday morning with an 11 a.m. contest with New Orleans.
“TCU is a team that plays very well together,” Restrepo added. “They will be a very good match for us. They play the same style we do and have good chemistry. It will be a tough match, but we will be ready for the challenge.”
