TULSA, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma women's and men's cross country teams finished second and fourth, respectively, at the Hurricane Festival Saturday morning in Tulsa, Okla.
Oklahoma sophomore Kelly Waters built on last year's fourth-place finish by winning the women's individual title, pacing the two-mile course in 11 minutes and 22 seconds in OU's first action of the season. Eddie Henshaw of Tulsa won the men's four-mile race in 20:03.
Tulsa scored 32 points to win the women's team title over Oklahoma (49), Oklahoma State (55) and Oral Roberts (92). The Oral Roberts men's team edged out host Tulsa's 43 points, to win the title with 41 points. Rounding out the men's scoring were Oklahoma State (50) and Oklahoma with 76 points.
The OU women's team had a trio of top-ten finishers as junior Lauren Watson (11:36) finished fourth and Kansas State transfer Lindsay Pierson (11:52) crossed the line in eighth along with Waters' first-place run.
Rounding out the women's scoring was Chelsea Jones with a time of 12:22 and Amanda Mayfield finishing the course with a mark of 12:58. Freshman Natalie Crain, while not contributing to Oklahoma's team score as the team's sixth runner to cross the line, finished 27th with a time of 13:31.
The Sooner men were led by junior Chris Sweeney (21:19), who finished 12th, while newcomers Andres Gonzalez (21:23) and Cole Crosby (21:29) came in 14th and 15th, respectively. Conner Wann (22:04) and Aaron Gable (22:07) rounded out the men's scoring in Saturday's meet.
The Sooners return to action Friday, Sept. 5 at the Arkansas/Missouri Southern State Dual in Fayetteville, Ark.
