Updated each weekday morning, Boomer Bytes is your
quick guide to Sooners in the news:
Brandon George of the
Dallas Morning News: "He greets everyone with an engaging smile and affable personality. McCoy's standout play on the field and leadership away from it are big reasons the Sooners
haven't fallen apart in the face of adversity. McCoy, who has a tireless work ethic, won't allow it. "As far..."
Berry Tramel of the
Oklahoman: "The Sooners started jumping early. Jumping, jumping, jumping, like the sidelines were spring loaded. Jumping like kids turned loose in a mattress factory. Truth is, they'd been
jumping for days. "Last week," said defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. "It started last week. We came to..."
John Hoover of the
Tulsa World: "They call Oklahoma-Oklahoma State "Bedlam." But that can wait until next week. This? This was
"Pandemonium." OU defensive tackle Gerald McCoy sprinted to the stands and hugged anyone within six feet of the front row...
Mike Jones of the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram: "The Sooners
sacked Tech quarterback Graham Harrell four times, this against an offensive line that had allowed only five through 10 games. That included two in a row by Adrian Taylor and Gerald McCoy to break a string of 80 passes since the last TT sack. Three times OU..."
Jake Trotter of the
Oklahoman: "
Statement delivered. Oklahoma's defense silenced its critics Saturday night, dismantling the nation's third-best scoring offense in a 65-21 rout. "We wanted to pound them," McCoy said. "We wanted to come out and set the tone early. "I think we sent a message to whoever was watching. We're for real..."
From SoonerSports.com: "Oklahoma defensive tackle
Gerald
McCoy has been named one of 16 semifinalists
for the 2009 Wooden Cup. He is the fourth OU student-athlete
to be considered for the award over the last four years..."
John Hoover of the
Tulsa World: "This is where we're going to have to prove it," said OU defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. "They say
defense wins championships, but this is our chance." Oklahoma's offense is holding up its end, averaging 49.8 points and 538 yards per game. Those averages over an entire..."
Jake Trotter of the
Oklahoman: "Defensive tackle
Gerald McCoy has been named to the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, marking the third consecutive year that a Sooner player has been named to the prestigious squad."
Jake Trotter of the
Oklahoman: "By tying up interior blockers, McCoy allowed OU's three linebackers to lead the team in tackles. And for those reasons,
McCoy is playing better than any Sooner defensive tackle since Tommie Harris manned the middle five years ago."
From the
Oklahoman: "Listen, Gerald's an advantage," Venables said. "Those (other) guys are solid. "Gerald... he really can't be with those other guys. Gerald, he's on his own planet."
McCoy has two tackles for loss through two games and has been a constant menace to opposing backfields."
John Hoover of the
Tulsa World:
McCoy, a 21-year-old humanitarian, servant of mankind and citizen of the world, who says it's his dream to one day open the Gerald Keith McCoy Community Center so he can give inner-city kids a positive place to play and learn and grow.
John Hoover of the
Tulsa World: "Lee Roy Selmon, for one, thinks so. The man widely regarded as the greatest Sooner of all time acknowledges he has not closely studied
McCoy, but is impressed with what he has seen so far."
John Shinn of the
Norman Transcript: "Oklahoma's
coaching staff has always preached the philosophy of
the best players playing regardless of age or class.
The players expressed the same
philosophy with
the selection of this season's team captains. Sophomore
quarterback Sam Bradford and sophomore defensive tackle
Gerald McCoy were among the five selected."
John Hoover of the
Tulsa World: "If you want
to get a finger on the pulse of the Oklahoma defense,
talk to tackle
Gerald
McCoy. McCoy is as humble and respectful a young
man as I've come across in more than 25 years covering
sports. But he also somehow finds a way to speak his
mind. And what comes out of his mouth is usually the
spot-on truth and not just some flamboyant opinion."
From the
Oklahoman: "According to McCoy,
the defense was plagued by "penalties," "lack of
intensity" and "mental errors." "We're trying to be
national champions, not just win the Big 12 and lose
a bowl game," McCoy said. "We're
tired of
that reputation."
From John Hoover of the
Tulsa World: "Oklahoma sophomore defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been nominated for the 2008 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
McCoy, an Oklahoma City native, is among 71 nominees nationwide. A panel of judges will select two 11-player teams in all college football subdivisions."
