COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - The No. 7 Oklahoma softball team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to No. 5 Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex after TAMU's Jami Lobpries ended the scoreless game with her game-winning double in the bottom of the sixth.
The Aggies recorded the sweep of the Sooners in front of another capacity crowd of 1,244 at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Sooners fell to 35-11 and 8-2 in the Big 12 while Texas A&M pushed its perfect conference record to 11-0 and 39-6 overall.
Neither team could do much offensively the whole game as TAMU's Megan Gibson held the Sooners to only two hits while the Aggies only recorded five hits off of OU's Lauren Eckermann, but also stranded nine on the base paths.
Gibson extended her perfect record to 25-0 in the circle as she threw the two-hit shutout while striking out seven and only walking one.
Offensively, Haley Anderson and Samantha Ricketts recorded OU's only hits. Susan Ogden had two at bats where she hit the ball to the wall, including one in the top of the sixth that looked like it would give the Sooners the lead. However, TAMU's left fielder made a catch on her knees to end the frame. The catch was a game changer as Texas A&M scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
OU starter Lauren Eckermann took the loss and fell to 10-4 on the season after giving up one run on five hits while walking four and striking out three.
Freshman nine-hole hitter Anderson broke up Gibson's no-hitter in the top of the sixth. The rookie blooped a single into left field to give OU its first base runner since the first frame as Gibson had retired 15 straight batters until Anderson. Amber Flores followed that with a walk as OU had two runners on and Savannah Long up to bat, but the senior flew out to left field. Next, Ogden hammered a ball to the wall for the second straight at bat, but left fielder Kelsey Spittler made the catch on her knees to save the runs from scoring.
The Aggies answered back in the bottom of the sixth as Holly Ridley led off with a single up the middle. Alex Reynolds laid down a sacrifice bunt as third baseman Jessica Legendre tried to get the out at second, but the runner was safe. Next, the Sooners got the force out at third for the first out of the frame, but the Aggies still had runners at first and second. Lobpires came through with an RBI double to right center that gave Texas A&M the first lead of the game, 1-0. Eckermann kept the Sooners in the game as she retired the next two batters to give OU one last chance in the top of the seventh.
Ricketts led off the seventh with a single up the middle and was pinch run for by freshman Krystle Huey. Huey was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Vandever for the first out of the frame. Traci Dickenson followed that with a pop up to third as Wendy Trott stepped to the plate with a runner at second and two outs. The Sooners couldn't extend the game as Trott grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.
The Sooners will enjoy almost a week off before facing Iowa State in a two-game series next weekend in Ames, Iowa. OU and ISU will open the series on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday.
