AMES, Iowa-- The No. 8 Oklahoma softball team added another Big 12 win on Saturday afternoon as it topped Iowa State, 5-3, in the first game of the series Saturday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.
Oklahoma improved to 36-11 overall and 9-2 in the conference while the Cyclones 26-20 and 3-7 in the league.
Junior pitcher D.J. Mathis threw her 17th complete game of the season and gave up three earned runs on only five hits while striking out nine in the contest. The East Alton, Ill. native improved to 23-5 on the season.
The Sooners recorded two strong offensive innings to secure the victory as OU plated three runs in the second and two runs in the fifth to lead 5-0, before the Cyclones scored three with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
Offensively, the Sooners tallied 7 hits against the Cyclones with seven different players having one-hit performances. Five Sooners (Flores, Legendre, Ogden, Trott and Vandever) drove in runs to lead Oklahoma.
The Sooners got things started in the top of the second as Samantha Ricketts singled followed by a Lindsey Vandever 10-pitch walk.
Savannah Long then laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third.
Wendy Trott singled to center to bring home Ricketts and the Sooners led 1-0. Jessica Legendre followed that up with a fielder's choice single to bring home Vandever and extend the lead to 2-0.
Haley Anderson singled to center field to load the bases with Amber Flores at the plate. Flores walked and Trott scored to put Oklahoma ahead 3-0.
Mathis struck out two batters in each of the third and fourth innings to give her six strikeouts through four innings of play.
OU tallied two more runs in the top of the fifth after Chana'e Jones' single to left. After the hit, Krystle Huey came in to pinch run for Jones and quickly stole second base.
Senior Susan Ogden came to the plate and ripped a double to right-center field to score Huey and the Sooners extended their lead to 4-0.
Ricketts grounded out to first but Ogden was able to advance to third. Vandever singled and knocked home Ogden from third as OU led 5-0.
Iowa State got within two runs in the bottom of the fifth with two outs as Sydni Jones singled and was followed up by a walk from Carrie Monroe to put runners on first and second.
Jacquelyn Beatty struck out swinging but advanced to first on a wild pitch in the dirt to load the bases.
Kristy Olsen took full advantage of the opportunity and drove in Jones on a single to center. Kelsey Kidwell came to the plate with the bases load and knocked a single to left to score Monroe and Beatty to make the score 5-3. Olsen was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.
Oklahoma loaded the bases in the top of the sixth after Dani Dobbs drew a walk while pinch hitting for Anderson and Flores reached first on a fielder's choice. Huey singled to load the bases with Ogden coming to the plate.
The threat was halted as the Sooner right fielder flied out to center field.
Mathis retired the first three batters of the seventh to end the game in a 5-3 OU win.
Next, the Sooners and Cyclones close out their series with an 11 a.m. contest Sunday morning.
