NORMAN, Okla. -- The offense keeps rolling and the wins keep coming for the OU baseball team, which improved to 9-2 overall with a 12-2 win over Western Illinois (0-3) on Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
The Sooners have won six straight games and will continue the four-game series with the Leathernecks on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at noon. The second game will immediately follow the completion of game one, which was originally scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Despite frigid temperatures on Friday, the Sooners' offense remained hot with its fourth straight game with 10 or more hits. OU scored in each of the first four innings and led 9-2 after five frames. The Sooners tacked on three more runs late and have scored 10 or more runs in three of the last four games.
Leading the offense on Friday was junior Matt Harughty, who had three hits and three RBIs, including his first career home run, a two-run shot to right field in the eighth. Harughty was joined by freshman Casey Johnson and sophomore Jamie Johnson, who each had three hits. Senior Mike Gosse, junior J.T. Wise and sophomore Aaron Baker also had multi-hit games, with two hits apiece.
Gosse is perhaps the Sooners' hottest hitter during the winning streak. The British Columbia native has hit in six consecutive games (tying a career high) and has done so out of the Sooners' leadoff spot with a .522 batting average. In addition, Gosse has connected for 11 RBIs, nine runs scored, five doubles and two homers in that span.
Sophomore Chase Anderson got the start for OU on the mound and lasted seven innings. In that span, Anderson allowed two runs off seven hits and three walks. Anderson earned the first win of his OU career and struck out three in the process. Anderson's counterpart, Mark DiBernardo, took the loss after allowed nine runs, seven unearned, off 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched.
Friday's win marked the 100th for head coach Sunny Golloway at Oklahoma. Golloway only needed 154 games as the Sooners' skipper to accomplish the feat. In his 12th season as a head coach at the Division I level, Golloway is 435-210 (.674) overall and his winning percentage ranks in the top 15 among active DI coaches with at least five years of experience.
"With the legacy of all the outstanding coaches we have had at the University of Oklahoma, to get one win is special for anybody and to get 100 is kind of surreal," said Golloway. "Now we have to start working on the next 100."
The Sooners next opportunity will come on Saturday. Game one can be heard live via the internet on Oklahoma All-Access, SoonerSports.com's premium web site. Game two will be joined in progress on KOKC 1520 AM following the men's basketball game against Missouri. Fans that present their men's basketball ticket at L. Dale Mitchell Park will receive a $3 admission into baseball's games on Saturday.
