NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooners displayed their offense on Tuesday in their third straight win with a 15-3 win over North Dakota State at L. Dale Mitchell Park. OU recorded season highs in runs and hits to up its overall record to 6-2 while North Dakota State lost its season opener.
Senior Mike Gosse had a game-high four RBIs after connecting for two doubles in the game and the Sooners outhit the Bison, 21-8.
Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, OU came back to score four runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings. The Sooners also tacked on three runs in the fourth inning and limited the Bison to one run in the fourth and fifth.
Freshman Ryan Duke recorded his second win of the year to improve to 2-1. Duke has won two straight starts in the last two weeks and lasted five innings with five strikeouts in Tuesday's victory.
NDSU tagged Duke for three runs off six hits and four walks before giving way to sophomore Garrett Richards, who pitched well in his first outing of the year allowing just one hit in three innings pitched, and senior Zach Sawyer (one inning pitched, one hit and two strikeouts).
The Bison's Jake Laber took the loss after allowing nine runs, five earned, off 11 hits and a walk. Offensively, Kole Zimmerman and Gavin Hofer led NDSU with two hits apiece.
"This was a good win for our club today, especially our offense," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "Mike Gosse continues to hit the ball well for us out of the leadoff spot and it was good to see Aaron Baker get going today."
Baker, OU's freshman All-American a year ago, struggled early in the season but had a single in the sixth inning and a two-run single in the seventh inning on Tuesday. Five other Sooners had two hits in the ball game and freshman Casey Johnson led all hitters with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Tuesday's win is the start of a seven-game home stand for Oklahoma and a stretch that will see it play 11 of the next 13 games at home in a 14-day span.
The Sooners and Bison resume the series on Wednesday with a doubleheader that is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The second game of the day will immediately follow. Both games can be heard live on the internet via Oklahoma All-Access, SoonerSports.com's premium site.
