LINCOLN, Neb. -- Oklahoma plated three runs in the top of the ninth but came up short in a 4-3 loss at No. 22 Nebraska on Saturday.
Nebraska now holds a 2-0 lead heading into Sunday's finale and improved to 17-3 overall and 5-0 in Big 12 play. The Sooners dropped to 17-7 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
The Sooners rallied late by loading the bases in the top of the ninth inning. With zero outs and Mike Gosse at the plate, Erik Anderson delivered a wild pitch that resulted in a run and a strikeout. Down 4-1, Aljay Davis drove in the Sooners' second run on an infield single to cut the initial lead in half.
Unfortunately, the Sooners' rally was halted as the next two batters were sat down in order to give Mike Nesseth his second save of the season.
"We have put ourselves in a position to score runs and win both of these games, and we have not done either so far in the series," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "Both games could have gone either way. Yesterday we had a late lead and today we rallied in the ninth, but it was too late. Now we have to keep battling and respond offensively tomorrow."
Nebraska took an early lead and posted three runs on OU starter Andrew Doyle (4-2) and the Sooner defense. Jake Opitz drove in the first run on a single to right field and Nick Sullivan had a two-run single and the second run was unearned after a throwing error on OU shortstop Tyson Seng.
The Cornhuskers added extra insurance in the bottom of the seventh and took a 4-0 lead on Jake Opitz's solo home run down the right-field line.
Doyle finished strong after a tough start. The sophomore threw a season-high 113 pitches in 7 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits and two walks. Doyle struck out six and was relieved by Mark Guest who tossed the final out of the eighth inning.
The Sooner offense struggled again on Saturday. Besides the three runs in the ninth, OU placed runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings and came up empty handed, helping Thad Weber improve to 4-1. Weber struck out six batters and received three double plays from his defense to hold the OU scoreless in his seven innings of work.
Oklahoma connected for 13 hits, outpacing Nebraska (nine hits) for the second straight day. Matt Harughty and Gosse led OU with three hits apiece while Davis and Casey Johnson had two base knocks.
The Sooners and Cornhuskers will conclude the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the internet via Oklahoma All-Access, SoonerSports.com's premium site. Oklahoma's Michael Rocha (2-0, 3.60 ERA) is projected to start on the mound opposite Nebraska's Aaron Pribanic (2-0, 0.76 ERA).
