NORMAN, Okla. - In only her second career start, sophomore Sarah Freudenrich had a career night to help lead Oklahoma to a 3-0 sweep of Colorado in women's volleyball action Wednesday evening. The Sooners (8-10, 4-6 Big 12) snapped a four-match losing skid and extended their win streak against the Buffaloes (9-8, 3-5 Big 12) to five matches.
Freudenrich set new season-highs in four statistical categories. She led OU with 10 kills, hitting a .300 clip on the evening. Freudenrich also tallied two block solos and six block assists. She led the Sooners with 15 points on the evening. Redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu tallied nine kills and led the team with a .333 hitting percentage.
Freshman Caitlin Higgins added seven kills, while junior Bridget Laplante had five. Laplante led the Sooners defensively with 13 digs. Senior Lacy Barnes added 11 in the win. As a team, OU out-blocked the Buffs, 9-3. In addition to Freudenrich's putbacks, Laplante added her first block solo of the season and she, along with freshmen Brianne Barker and Suzy Boulavsky, added two block assists each. Barker was once again the team's leading assist player with 29 on the night.
Oklahoma controlled the opening set from the first serve and hit .296 to take a 25-15 win. OU led 5-1 and eventually led 18-9 before taking the 25-15 win. The second set stayed close early and saw the two teams tie a total of seven times. After the set's last tie at 14-all, OU took a 16-14 lead on kills from Laplante and Ekwerekwu. The Buffs responded but OU's offensive attack kept CU at bay. The Sooners led 22-18 before calling timeout after having CU cut the lead to two at 22-20. Out of the timeout, OU answered with kills from Higgins and Boulavsky to reach set point and won 25-21 following a CU service error. As a team, OU hit .400 during the second period.
The Sooners dominated the third set leading 20-9 before the Buffs scored their 10th point on a kill from Alex Buth. After an OU miscue, Oklahoma recovered to score the next three points to take a 23-11 advantage. The Sooners got help from the Buffs as a CU attack error ended the set, 25-15 and gave OU the sweep, 3-0.
Oklahoma returns to action Saturday evening facing the Kansas Jayhawks in a 7 p.m. CT contest from the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. The Sooners return home to host second-ranked Nebraska on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
