NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's volleyball team took the opening set from the third-ranked Texas Longhorns but fell, 3-1, on Wednesday evening at McCasland Field House. The Sooners (7-7, 3-3 Big 12) won the opener 25-21 in front of 1,356, the fourth largest crowd all-time at McCasland. The Longhorns (9-2, 3-1 Big 12) responded by winning the next three sets, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-19.

“It was great to win the first set against the third-ranked team in the nation,” said OU head coach Santiago Restrepo. “We needed to block more in those first sets, but overall I was proud of our team and how they continued to fight.”

Redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu led the way for the Sooners with 12 kills. Freshman setter Brianne Barker tied her season-high with seven kills and led the team with a .438 hitting percentage. Barker recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 33 assists and 11 digs.

Freshman Caitlin Higgins and senior Lacy Barnes also recorded double-digit dig totals with 16 and 18, respectively. Junior Bridget Laplante was one dig shy of her seventh double-double of the season. Laplante contributed 10 kills with nine digs on the evening.

The Longhorns had four players tally double-digit kills, led by Destinee Hooker's 19. Michelle Kocher added 57 helpers for UT and Heather Kisner led the Longhorns with 25 digs.

The Sooners took the opening set after taking a 5-4 lead early. From there, OU never relinquished the lead in the set. Oklahoma hit .312 in that opener and saw Laplante and Ekwerekwu tallied. 400 clips. Higgins added a .375 hitting percentage.

“I think every match is important,” Restrepo added. “We like to enter the game with the mindset that we can win any match. Any team can win any match on any day.”

The Sooners return to action Saturday evening facing Iowa State in a 6:30 p.m. CT contest from Ames, Iowa.
