SAN DIEGO - The Oklahoma volleyball team (7-1) added another win in the USD Invitational as the Sooners swept UCSB (2-6) by scores of 30-24, 30-28 and 30-22.
The Sooners will close out the tournament Saturday night with a 9 p.m. meeting with No. 18 San Diego, the first ranked team the Sooners have faced all season.
Bridget Laplante notched her third double -double of the season as she led the Sooners on offense with 16 kills while also collecting 14 digs on defense.
Mariana Blum was also stellar for the Sooners , adding her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and a team-best 22 digs.
Other offensive contributors included Sarah Weiland who added 12 kills while Francie Ekwerekwu added nine behind setter Julie Chester's 50 kills. Chester led the offense to a .201 hitting percentage.
Defensively, The Sooners registered 10 blocks and 75 digs. In addition to Blum and Laplante's defense, Lacy Barnes (10) and Hannah Sharp (15) also registered double-digit digs. Ekwerekwu was impressive at the net with six block assists while Anna Stadel recorded four block assists.
The Sooners jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the first game and didn't trail until the Gauchos went on an 8-0 run and led 19-15. However, Oklahoma responded and tied with a four-point rally of its own to lead 22-20. Both teams went back and forth until the Sooners closed out the first set with five straight points, including a game-ending Sarah Weiland kill.
Similar to game one, the second set saw both teams battling back and forth as there were nine ties and six lead changes in the second frame. Oklahoma took the lead at 21-20 and never trailed, but UCSB did tie it up at 27-27. The Sooners used kills by Ekwerekwu, Blum and Laplante to close out the second frame and take the 2-0 lead at the break.
After trailing 7-6 in the third frame, the Sooners took the 8-7 advantage and never looked back as they took the final game, 30-22, and added their sixth sweep of the season.
