NORMAN, Okla. -- As part of Oklahoma's year-long centennial celebration, the OU Athletics Department is joining the city of Norman to commemorate 100 years of the state's history this weekend with a number of events surrounding the Miami game.

Two hours prior to kickoff, the fourth of four statues honoring the University of Oklahoma's Heisman Trophy winners will be dedicated at Heisman Park on the east side of Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

A statue of 2003 winner Jason White will join those of Billy Sims, Steve Owens and Billy Vessels which already overlook the grounds. White will also be honored on the field during halftime festivities.

In a unique display of patriotism and pride in the state's history, the U.S. Army Silver Wings Parachute Team will drop into the stadium to present the nation's colors for the national anthem. They will also carry with them the official Oklahoma Centennial flag, signifying 100 years of Oklahoma's contributions to our country.

The halftime show will feature a special performance by the Pride of Oklahoma honoring the state's 100th anniversary. The show is a culmination of weeklong activities by the city of Norman celebrating the Centennial.

Highlights of the halftime show will also include appearances by "The Rocketman" and Lawton-native Lauren Nelson, Miss America 2007. A junior music theater major at the University of Central Oklahoma and an aspiring Broadway star, Nelson became the second Miss Oklahoma in a row to win the Miss America crown.

This weekend's festivities are just part of a series of events the Athletics Department is conducting throughout the year to display its pride in the state's unique history and the extraordinary future that lies ahead.

One of the most significant pieces is the 2007 Sooner football tickets, which feature the official logo adopted by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission and link the great impact each institution has had on the other.

As stated on the tickets, while the Sooners actually pre-date Oklahoma's admittance to the Union by 13 years, the two have reveled in each other's success and pulled from each other's strengths for so long that they are now nearly one in the same. For many, you can't say 'Oklahoma' without saying 'Sooners'.

As these two great institutions join together this weekend to commemorate a history of success, the OU Athletics Department asks all fans to join in the celebration.
