NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma cross country team heads to Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday, Sept. 29, for the 2007 Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Over 3,000 high school and collegiate athletes are expected to compete in the event, hosted by the University of Minnesota, giving the Sooners a tough test after sweeping the season-opening Hurricane Festival Sept. 1.
Five teams from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association men's top-30 poll will participate in the event with Minnesota (18), Northern Arizona (19), Michigan State (23), Virginia (28) and Iowa State (29) all competing. The women's side will feature four teams from the women's top-10 in Arizona State (6), Minnesota (8), Michigan State (9) and Virginia (10).
The men are led by sophomore Rob Sorrell, who was named the Big 12 cross country runner of the week after defending last year's title in the Hurricane Festival, winning the four-mile run in 19 minutes, 34 seconds.
Junior Tony Clement, who is the team's only upperclassman, finished second in the Hurricane Festival while Jon Grey came in fourth. Sophomores Jacob Boone, Matt Grey and Chris Sweeney along with freshman Kevin Schwab round out the Sooner contingent.
With All-American Jessica Eldridge not competing this weekend, the women's team will turn to Catherine Odell, Jessica Engel and Kelly Waters, who all finished in the top four at the Hurricane Festival behind Eldridge. Christina Ferber, Chelsea Jones and Lauren Watson will also take to the course for the Sooners.
The men's Gold competition begins at 12:10 p.m. with the Jack Johnson Women's Gold division following at 12:55 p.m.
A complete recap and full results will be available on SoonerSports.com shortly following the conclusion of the event.
