NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 22 Oklahoma volleyball team closed out its preseason practices with a Red/White scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at the Howard McCasland Field House. In a close five-game match, the Red team won the match by scores of 36-34, 28-30, 31-33, 30-20 and 15-13.
Following the match, all of the fans joined the entire team for a post-match pizza picnic outside on the Field House lawn.
"I thought this was a great competition for our girls today," head coach Santiago Restrepo said. "As you can tell, it was two very evenly matched teams. I thought our eight newcomers really stepped up and showed their potential while our returners really led the way for their respective teams. It was a fun day and a good tune-up for our home tournament next weekend."
Senior Marian Blum highlighted the Red squad's offense with her team-best 23 kills and 26 digs in the match. Blum was one of four red players to record double digit kills as she was followed by newcomers Jackie Fotu (12 kills), Chrissy Disarro (11kills) and senior Anna Stadel (11 kills). In addition to Blum's defense, libero Hannah Sharp collected 24 digs and Disarro and Stadel added eight block assists.
Sophomore Bridget Laplante led the way for the White team with her 24 kills and 20 digs while redshirt freshman Francie Ekwerekwu pounded 20 kills and Megan Bess added 12 kills for the White offense. Libero Lacy Barnes collected 19 digs for the White defense while Ekwerekwu and Bess notched two solo blocks and three block assists each.
Setter Samantha Arriaran, a freshman, led her team to victory with 62 assists while senior Julie Chester was also efficient for the White squad with her 52 assists.
The scrimmage ended preseason practices which began two weeks ago as the Sooners will begin a regular schedule this Monday with the beginning of classes.
Oklahoma will begin its regular season this Friday night at the Howard McCasland Field House as it hosts the Sooner Legends Nike Invitational (Aug. 24-25). OU will open the four-team tournament on Friday night against Denver at 7 p.m. The Sooners will close out the tournament with a 10 a.m. match on Saturday against Seton Hall followed by a 7 p.m. match against Alabama.
