OU Women in Third After First Round

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma women's golf team is in third place through the first round of play of the 18-team Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the par-72, 6,013-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman. The Sooners recorded a 1-over-par 289 Sunday morning and trail leader Baylor (282) by seven strokes and second-place SMU (287) by two shots.
Freshman Chelsey Collins paced OU with a 2-under 70, a round that featured five birdies. Collins stands in a tie for eighth place. Sophomore Kendall Dye and junior Heather Wright each shot an even-par 72 and are tied for 12th place.
Texas Tech's Ulrika Van Niekerk shot a 66 to set a tournament and course record. The previous tournament record of 67 was set by the University of Tulsa's Nancy Lopez in 1976 while the previous course mark (also a 67) was set by OU's Isabelle Blais.

Arkansas' Stacey Lewis and UTEP's Jullianne Kim recorded first-round 67s and stand in a tie for second place. Lewis tied for fifth place at last week's LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship.
Second-round results will be posted Sunday evening by approximately 8 CDT. Monday's final round will begin at 8 a.m.
