NORMAN, Okla. Former Oklahoma volleyball player Laura Tomes has been added to the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Training Team and will begin training with the squad on March 9. The All-Big 12 honorable mention selection was chosen following the recently completed U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held in Colorado Springs.
As a senior in 2006, Tomes averaged 3.94 points, 1.19 blocks, 2.95 kills, 0.29 aces and 1.19 digs per game while leading the Sooners to their best finish in school history.
She finished the season with a .367 attack percentage and completed her Sooner career as the career leader in hitting percentage (.298). She ended her career with 333 blocks and a 0.94 blocks per game average.
“This is going to be an amazing opportunity for me as I get to train with some of the top players around the country,” Tomes said. “I'm looking forward to representing the University of Oklahoma as well as the USA.”
“This is a tremendous honor for Laura and for our program,” Oklahoma head coach Santiago Restrepo said. “She is an upstanding, classy student-athlete that is not only going to be a great representative from our university, but also for this country.”
The U.S. Women's National Training Team now includes 11 members with the addition of Tomes. Additional invited players who will join the U.S. Women's National Training Team in May will be announced tentatively on March 23, along with selections to two 10-member A2 squads. The A2 squads will compete at the USA Volleyball Adult Open Championships May 26-June 2 in Austin, Texas.
