Women Defeat Iowa for Second Time

March 18, 2007 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN, Okla. The ninth-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team defeated Iowa 195.475-193.825 Saturday night at the Howard McCasland Field House.  It was the Sooners' second win this season over the Hawkeyes, having won in Iowa City on Feb. 18.

Senior Brittney Koncak-Schumann took her fifth all-around title of the season with a 39.325.  Junior Kiara Redmond (39.125) was second, while sophomore Haley DeProspero was third (39.000).

Oklahoma claimed at least a share of every team and individual event title against the Hawkeyes.

“I think in general it was a disappointing performance for us,” OU head coach K.J. Kindler said.  “We're a much better team than we showed tonight.  I wouldn't say it's what we're capable of by any means.”

Final Scores

Freshman Jackie Flanery and sophomore Ashley Jackson tied for first on vault (9.825).  Koncak-Schumann won the bars (9.875) and beam (9.875) crowns, and shared the floor title with Jackson (9.85).

Redmond and senior Lori Winn also tied for third on floor with matching 9.825s.  Redmond also finished third on beam with a 9.775, while Winn scored a 9.85 to earn second place on bars.

The Sooners wrap up the regular season on Senior Night, March 24 at the Field House against Pittsburgh before beginning postseason play at the Big 12 Championships on March 31.

“I hope we can take today's floor performance, because I do think it was one of our best, and really just scrap what we did on the other events and get back to doing what we know how to do,” Kindler said.  “Overall it's back to the drawing board, back to hard work.  That's what turns it around.  We need to get refocused this week and make sure our seniors go out in style.”
