Jacques Leads OU to Finish Sixth
February 25, 2007 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished in a tie for sixth place after shooting a final-round 300 (+16) at the 17-team Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico, marking the third top-six finish for the Sooners this season. The Sooners completed the tournament with a team score of 893 (+29) at the par-72, 6,000-yard Coco Beach Golf Course. OU landed 20 strokes behind tournament champion Auburn which shot an 873 (+9).
Kelly Jacques tied for eighth place with a tournament total 219 (+3). The junior led the Sooners in the final round of play by firing a 73 (+1). It marked Jacques' third top-10 finish this season and sixth in her career. She finished two strokes behind the tournament medalists.
"What a fantastic finish from Kelly," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "She played with such poise. Chelsey (Collins) and Heather (Wright) also really came through to help the team's finish."
Collins, a freshman, and Wright, a junior, finished the tournament five-over par (221) in a tie for 15th place. Collins carded a final-round 77 (+5) and Wright turned in a 74 (+2). Collins' second-round 68 put her in third on OU's all-time single-round-low list. She is one of only three freshmen to appear in the records. Wright's finish topped her previous career best of 225.
Senior Megan Goodwin shot 76 (+4) to finish in a tie for 45th. Sophomore Kendall Dye finished the tournament in a 56th-place tie with a score of 237 (+21). Senior Jaclyn Stelzer tied for 73rd place shooting 24 over (240).
"Our finish in such a difficult field this weekend gives us great momentum," Ludvigson said. "This gets us ready for the next tournament and a good way to start the spring slate."
The Sooners will return to the links March 9-11 at the "Mo" Morial Invitational in College Station, Texas. The tournament will be hosted by Texas A&M on the par-72, 6,255-yard Traditions Golf Club course.
