NORMAN, Okla. - Blake Griffin, a freshman forward on the University of Oklahoma men's basketball team, was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Sooners to an 88-82 double-overtime road win over 23rd-ranked West Virginia on Saturday.
OU's victory, its third straight, was its first on the road against a ranked team since the 2000-01 season and improved the Sooners to 10-3 this year.
Griffin tied a career-high with 18 points and pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds (five offensive) against the Mountaineers, while adding two assists and two steals. It was the fifth double-double of the year for the 6-10, 243-pounder, and the second straight against a top-25 team (he finished with 15 points and 14 boards against then-No. 18 Gonzaga on Dec. 20).
Griffin leads Oklahoma in scoring and rebounding with his 13.5 and 8.9 averages. Over the last two contests, he is averaging 16.5 points and 15.0 boards. Griffin ranks third in the Big 12 in rebounding and third in field goal percentage (.570).
Texas Tech freshman guard John Roberson was named the league's Rookie of the Week after scoring 28 points in a 95-71 win over Northwestern State.
Oklahoma is off until Saturday when it hosts Rice at Lloyd Noble Center at 2 p.m. CST. The Sooners are ranked No. 24 in Monday's CollegeRPI.com listing.
