NORMAN, Okla. - For the second straight year, the Oklahoma volleyball team collected individual All-Big 12 honors. Senior right side hitter Sarah Weiland was named to the All-Big 12 honorable mention team while redshirt freshman middle blocker Francie Ekwerekwu highlighted the Big 12's inaugural All-Freshman team.
It marks each player's first Big 12 accolade of their career. It also marks the first time since the 1993 and 1994 seasons that Oklahoma has had at least one all-conference pick in back-to-back seasons.
Weiland was one of two returning starters from last year's squad and led the Sooners during the conference season. The Phlugerville, Texas, native averaged 3.01 kills per game on a .253 hitting percentage during league play. She also contributed on defense with 0.64 blocks per game and 1.20 digs per game.
After redshirting last season, Ekwerekwu has been a staple in OU's offense as the Arlington, Texas, native joins Weiland as the only two players to participate in every game this season for the Sooners. The middle blocker stepped up her game during the Big 12 season as she averaged 2.61 kills per game on a team-best .344 hitting percentage during the conference season. Ekwerekwu was also one of OU's top defenders at the net as she averaged 0.95 blocks per game.
The No. 23 Oklahoma volleyball team will open the NCAA Tournament with Florida A&M at 4 p.m. (CST) in Gainesville, Fla. The winner of OU's match will face the winner of the Florida and College of Charleston in a second round match on Friday at 6 p.m. for a bid to the NCAA Sweet 16.
