NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 22 Oklahoma volleyball team placed five Sooners on the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday. Highlighting the first team were senior Hannah Sharp, junior Lacy Barnes, sophomore Bridget Laplante and redshirt freshman Francie Ekwerekwu. Senior Anna Stadel rounded out the group with a second team honor.
Sharp made her second straight appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 team while Laplante Ekwerekwu, Barnes and Stadel all earned their first academic honor.
Sharp, Laplante and Barnes were recognized earlier this season as members of ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-District VI teams.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the volleyball academic all league team consisted of 44 first team members combined with nine on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Sooners are rounding out the regular season and will play one of its final two home matches of the regular season this Wednesday. Oklahoma will host Baylor at 7 p.m. The first 500 fans will receive free OU Schooner hats.
