NORMAN, Okla. - Recording its third straight sweep, the Oklahoma volleyball team pushed its record to 5-2 with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-27) victory over Oral Roberts Wednesday night inside the Howard McCasland Field House.

“I thought we came out really strong tonight and took control in the first two games,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said.  “It was a total team effort tonight and that is what we continue to strive for.”

The Sooners dominated games one and two as they tallied a .323 hitting percentage in the first frame and a .289 clip in the second set while the Golden Eagles hit -.042 and .079, respectively.

However, ORU came out with a spark in the third frame as it opened the game with a 5-1 advantage, but the Sooners battled back as each team tied it up 13 different times.  OU rallied behind a Hannah Sharp ace to tie the game at 25-25, but ORU used a kill to even it at 27.  After OU called a time out, the Sooners rallied and scored three straight points to end the game and win the match.

“Freshman Bridget Laplante did a great job for in the third game,” Restrepo said.  “Her defense was crucial and she was the difference in that final set.”

Senior outside hitter Joanna Schmitt led notched her fourth double-double of the year with her 17-kill, 10-dig performance.  Schmitt was the lone Sooner to record double-digit kills or digs.

Adding to the team total hitting percentage of .232, senior Laura Tomes continued her consistent hitting as she tallied nine kills on a .316 clip while junior Sarah Weiland pounded six kills on a .417 clip.

In addition to Schmitt, the defense was aided by libero Anna Monsen, who collected eight digs while setter Rachel Jackson added eight digs in addition to her 37 assists.

In only two games of action, Laplante recorded six digs while also pounding five kills for the offense.

The Sooners also had an impressive performance behind the line as they tallied a team total of 11 aces, powered by Weiland's five.

The Sooners will take their three-game winning streak to Denton, Texas this weekend as they play in the Mean Green Classic this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 8-9).   OU will open tourney action with a 10:30 a.m. match against Sam Houston on Friday and follow it with a 7 p.m. meeting against host school North Texas.  Oklahoma wraps up tournament action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest against Texas Southern.
