2006 UAB Season Outlook
In a league where Tulsa and UCF can come from out of the blue to play for the championship, UAB certainly has to have hopes of getting a few big performances when needed and win the East. Only 12 starters return, but there's more than enough experience for the other spots and plenty of decent talent to get the job done if a few key players come through...

Quotes on Oklahoma Game
"They (OU) closed practice, I don't know why, maybe it was to change some things," Brown said. "It makes you think. (Thompson is) a really good running quarterback so it makes us have to think about more things. I think it's just harder on us. We're probably going to have to practice more things than we would have practiced with the other guy."
- Watson Brown, UAB Head Coach

"He (QB Chris Williams) will be the one out there first," said Brown. "He's been there before. He started at Georgia when we played them earlier. I'm not sure how we'll rotate them. It's going to be a total "feel" thing. We may be alternating all year. We'll see how it goes. They need to keep improving. They have one more week before we kick it off, but now we're into game-plan reps."

UAB In the News
The plan calls for UAB senior Chris Williams to take the first snap for the Blazers on Sept. 2 in Norman, Okla. After that, UAB head coach Watson Brown said, the plan gets fuzzy. "Sam (Hunt) could very well go the second series," Brown said. "It just depends on the flow of the game, and from there it will just be me (deciding) who I want to put out there."

The UAB Blazers didn't receive a complete makeover. It only seems that way. The Blazers have a roster filled with seniors, but they also have a new defensive coordinator along with a new quarterback and not coincidentally a new emphasis on the running game.

"We're pretty sore and the coaches wanted another day on Oklahoma so we started on OU today," Brown said. Brown said on Tuesday that he felt the Blazers were "flat wore out." He mentioned at the time that he was ready to "start backing off to let them get their legs back."

The UAB football team was originally scheduled to have an afternoon practice in full pads on Wednesday. Instead, the squad went through a 24-period session in shorts with their focus turning to their season opening opponent, Oklahoma...

The UAB Blazers are approaching their season-opener at No. 10 Oklahoma without a clear-cut quarterback pecking order, but coach Watson Brown hardly seems worried...

Brown also talked about his quarterback situation where he plans to use more than one signal-caller this season. It appears senior Chris Williams will be the starter in Norman, according to Brown, but junior transfer Sam Hunt will see action and depending on the "feel" of the game, it could come early against the Sooners....

UAB is a little more than a week away from opening the season at No.10-ranked Oklahoma. UAB head coach Watson Brown said if the season started today, Mullins would handle the punts and short field goals and sophomore Swayze Waters would take care of long field goals and kickoffs.
