NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma volleyball team continued its strong play in the spring exhibition season as it notched victories over Houston, SMU, Rice and New Mexico State this past Saturday in the Texas Tornadoes Volleyball Club Tournament in Houston, Texas. The Sooners are now a perfect 8-0 in spring exhibition play.
In its first match of the tournament, Oklahoma played a three-game match against Houston, winning it with scores of 30-28, 30-19 and 23-30. In the second match of the first round, the Sooners handed SMU a 3-0 (30-27, 37-35, 15-10) loss.
For second round action of the spring exhibition, the Sooners only played two games each against Rice (30-15, 30-26) and New Mexico State (30-22, 30-18), winning both matches.
“Overall our team has done an outstanding job of improving in every statistical category,” head coach
Santiago Restrepo said. “Our main goal this spring has been to improve on our ace to error ratio and we have done that. We are continuing to improve while also building team chemistry and confidence.”
As a squad, Oklahoma posted a .252 hitting percentage through four games and averaged 13.4 digs per game, defensively.
Individually, Laura Tomes and Eliane Santos led the offense with a .404 and .315 hitting percentage, respectively. Setter Rachel Jackson tallied nine aces in the four matches while also averaging 11.6 assists per game.
One the defensive end, Anna Monsen collected 24 digs while Hannah Sharp recorded 30 digs in the exhibitions. Additionally, Lacy Barnes chipped in with 25 digs in Saturday's play.
The Sooners will continue exhibition play this Saturday as they head to Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas, to take on Rice, North Texas, Wichita State and host school SMU.
