It's Academic: Bookout Picks Up Honor

February 09, 2006 | Men's Basketball

NORMAN, Okla. As Oklahoma senior Kevin Bookout's productive collegiate basketball career draws closer to an end, the forward picked up an academic honor Thursday. Bookout was named an ESPN The Magazine First-Team Academic All-District selection, representing district six of the College Sports Information Directors of America, and now becomes eligible for Academic All-America status.

A human relations major with a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average, Bookout was joined on the first team by Mississippi's Todd Abernethy, Texas-San Antonio's Kurt Attaway, Sam Houston State's Ryan Bright and Texas A&M's Chris Walker.

The 6-8, 270-pound Bookout has put together a solid senior campaign by averaging 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting a team-best .577 from the field. Bookout ranks second in school history with his .578 career field goal percentage and recently became the 34th player at OU to score 1,000 career points (he now ranks 32nd with 1,017 points). He also ranks 15th with 628 career rebounds.

"I feel very honored to be a student at the University of Oklahoma," said Bookout, who also competes in track and field and is a two-time All-American in the shot put. "My athletic achievements at OU certainly mean a lot to me, but I am also proud of the success I've had in the classroom. Earning good grades is something I've always worked hard to do, and I feel blessed to have had the educational opportunities that I've had during my four years here. OU is a special place."

Bookout, who was valedictorian at Stroud High School, was a first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection as a junior and was also honored with OU's Athletics Director's Leadership Award. He has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll six semesters and to the Dean's Honor Roll two semesters.
