November 30, 2006 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma linebacker Rufus Alexander has been named a first team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association. The team is selected by Division I-A head coaches.

Alexander, a senior, becomes the 142nd All-American in OU's 112 seasons of intercollegiate football competition. He is the 58th Oklahoma player honored by the AFCA. No other school has had as many AFCA All-Americans.

The Baton Rouge, La., native leads the Sooners with 95 tackles. He is attempting to become the first OU player to lead the team in tackles in back to back seasons since Rocky Calmus did so in three consecutive seasons from 1999-2001.

Alexander, who is tied for 17th on Oklahoma's all-time tackle list for linebackers with 275, has 55 unassisted stops this season along with 10.5 for loss, two sacks, an interception, three pass deflections, three fumbles forced and one fumble recovery.
