NORMAN, Okla.--The Oklahoma men's tennis team completed their first day of competition at the Rebel Classic, hosted by the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Players from Illinois, Arkansas, UNLV, Fresno State and Fresno Pacific, a NAIA program are competing in the tournament. Representing the Sooners at the Rebel Classic are juniors Federico Chavarria and Ryan Thomas.
In singles play Chavarria met UNLV's Elliot Wronski in flight one of singles play. Chavarria took the first set, 6-4, but dropped the last two sets, 2-6, 4-6, to lose the match. The loss moves him to the consolation bracket.
Thomas squared off against Albert Nersesyan of BYU in the flight two, round of 16. He won the match in two sets, 6-4, 6-3, advancing him to the quarterfinals where he faced BYU's Cassidy Mears. Thomas was defeated by Mears, 2-6, 4-6, eliminating him from the tournament.
Chavarria and Thomas teamed up for doubles competition. In the round of 16 the duo suffered a loss to Charles Irie and Mirko Zapletal of Fresno State. The pair loss the match, 3-8.
Day two of the tournament will begin 9 a.m. Saturday. Results will be posted on SoonerSports.com as soon as they become available.
