VB Picks Up More Academic Honors

NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 14 Oklahoma volleyball team placed five Sooners on the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday.  Four first-team accolades highlighted the group while one Sooner garnered second-team honors.

Highlighting the first team for the Sooners were seniors Rachel Jackson, Anna Monsen, Joanna Schmitt and junior Hannah Sharp.  Senior Eliane Santos rounded out the group with her second-team selection.

It marked the third straight selection for Jackson, Monsen and Schmitt.  Santos and Sharp are making their first appearances on the teams.

It also marks the second honor in the past week for Jackson and Sharp, who were both named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District VI teams.  Jackson represented Oklahoma on the second team while Sharp was named to the third team.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the volleyball academic all league team consisted of 42 first team members combined with eight on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The team will hit the road this Wednesday to take on the Missouri Tigers at 6:30 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.  Oklahoma will return home for its final two home matches of the season as it hosts Colorado on Saturday and rounds out the home schedule with Senior Night next Tuesday against Iowa State.  First serve for both matches will be at 7 p.m. inside the McCasland Field House.
