NORMAN | Watch SoonerSports.com video from the final home game of the 2006 season. Oklahoma defeated Texas Tech, 34-24, Saturday night in front of a record 85,313 fans at Owen Field.

The Don Key Award, presented annually since 1982, was given to senior quarterback Paul Thompson prior to the game. Sooner coaches have described the award as the highest honor an Oklahoma football player can receive while playing at OU.

Don Key was a three-year starter for Oklahoma, an All-Big Eight and a potential All-American until surgery for cancer ended his career in 1981. Former Sooner head coach Barry Switzer established the award in 1982.

Record Crowd Calls for the Sooners

The largest crowd to witness a sporting event in the state of Oklahoma then turned its attention to the game and began the familiar chant of Boomer, Sooner! The intro video fired up on the SoonerVision screen and the 2006 Sooners charged onto Owen Field to take care of business against the Red Raiders.
