September 11, 2005 | Volleyball

NORMAN, Okla.   Winning its first match in the Dome Rally this weekend, the Oklahoma women's volleyball team earned its third sweep of the season with a dominating win (30-21, 30-25, 30-20) over tournament host UT-San Antonio Sunday inside the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.  Oklahoma now owns a season mark of 5-3 while UTSA fell to 3-4.  The Sooners also extended their perfect series record against the Roadrunners to 3-0.

“I thought we really took care of business tonight against a very good UTSA club,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said.  “They're a very good defensive team and we were able to post a strong hitting percentage against them.  They hung with us in each game, but we were able to finish off each game in strong fashion.”

Box Score:  OU 3, UTSA 0 |  Updated 2005 Stats

It was no surprise that the Sooner offense was led by junior Eliane Santos, who pounded a match-high 18 kills while hitting at an impressive .368 clip.  Through the three-match tournament, Santos averaged 4.9 kills per game while hitting at a .189 clip.  Since earning a spot in the lineup against UT-Arlington last Wednesday, the middle blocker has recorded double-digit kills in all four matches.

Defensively, Santos also contributed a match-high eight block assists and seven digs.

Adding offensive presence was senior Gabriela Tonon with nine kills and eight digs.  Sophomore Anna Stadel continued her success in the tournament after posting eight kills and only two errors on 15 attempts for a .400 clip.

Junior setter Rachel Jackson, who has started every match for the Sooners this year, split time with sophomore setter Julie Chester.  In two games, Jackson tallied 21 assists while Chester added 12 assists in the final game.

“I thought Julie came in and did a great job for us today,” Restrepo said.  “I was really pleased with her work in the third game.”

On the defensive end, sophomore Hannah Sharp directed the Sooners with a 16-dig performance.  The former Louisville product has collected 10 or more digs in four straight matches and has done it in seven of OU's eight matches this season.

Junior Laura Tomes led OU at the net with two solo blocks, a match high, and three block assists.  Jackson added three block assists and sophomore Sarah Weiland added two helpers as well.

The Dome rally marked the end of non-conference play for the Sooners.  Oklahoma will open the Big 12 season with a match against the 24th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats this Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. inside the Howard McCasland Field House.  KSU will be the second ranked opponent OU has faced this season.

“We're excited to come back home for our Big 12 opener this Wednesday,” Restrepo said. “It's going to be an exciting match against Kansas State.”
