Sooners Hit the Field for Day Two

Sooners Hit the Field for Day Two

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma football team completed a long Friday with the second preseason practice of 2005 at the Rugby Fields on the Norman campus.

The Sooners worked outside without pads for an hour and a half before a summer storm moved practice to the Everest Indoor facility east of the stadium.

"I loved it to be honest," said OU head coach Bob Stoops. "The guys were running around with a lot of energy. I feel like there is a lot of talent and speed out there and they are really picking it up well."

The majority of the time on the Rugby Field was filled with drills. For the second consecutive day the battle between the secondary and wide receivers impressed the fans and media.

"There is a lot ability there," said Stoops in reference to the DBs and WRs. "We just need to continue to train it and make sure they are in the right position all the time. Give them credit, they are working it and picking it up quick."

In one-on-one drills, redshirt-freshman Quentin Chaney pulled in a spectacular catch after colliding with Chijioke Onyenegecha and hitting the ground. D.J. Wolfe, who moved to the defensive side of the ball in spring, snagged an impressive interception on a dead sprint down the south-facing sideline.

Once the practice moved indoors the squad split up with head-to-head lineman drills and seven-on-seven work on opposite ends of the indoor facility. Cornerback Eric Bassey picked off a pass in the early moments of seven-on-seven work, as did LB Demarrio Pleasant.

Sooner regular Jim 'J.R.' Ross was in attendance with good friend and fellow WWE star Rick Flair. Flair addressed the squad prior to a short scrimmage. After practice Stoops told media members that Flair was a good friend from his days as an assistant coach at Florida.

Earlier in the day, the coaches and players met with the press corps at the annual Media Day and then greeted fans and signed autographs during Meet the Sooners Day.

Oklahoma practices at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday before holding the first preseason scrimmage on Monday, Aug. 8, inside Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage is also slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
