NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma is ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press college football preseason poll released Saturday. The Sooners are one point behind No. 6 Ohio State in the voting, 1,205-1,204.
Oklahoma is one of four Big 12 Conference teams ranked by the AP. Texas is No. 2 with 1,500 points, Texas A&M checks in at No. 17 (576 points) and Texas Tech is listed at No. 21 with 256 points. Colorado and Nebraska are listed as receiving votes.
OU has a distinguished history in the media poll. The Sooners are tied with Notre Dame for most weeks ranked No. 1 by the Associated Press. The Sooners have been No. 1 for 95 weeks, as have the Irish, out of 922 weeks of AP polls. The AP first released a college football poll in 1936.
Oklahoma also holds the honor of being ranked in the top 5 of more AP polls than any other program in college football. The Sooners have spent 342 weeks in the top 5, ahead of No. 2 Nebraska (294 weeks) and No. 3 Notre Dame (272 weeks).
