NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma soccer team will prepare for the 2005 regular season with an exhibition game against Purdue on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m.
The preseason game is part of the Sixth Annual IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne) Soccer Showcase at the Hefner Soccer Fields in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Sooners will be one of seventeen schools, including men's and women's teams, competing in the event which begins on Aug. 18 and ends on Aug. 21.
“We are very excited to begin our competitive season against Purdue,” said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. “The game will be a preview to what will be another challenging non-conference schedule for us.”

The exhibition game marks the first ever meeting for OU against a team from the Big Ten Conference. The Sooners will face two other foes from the Big Ten this year in the first annual Big 12-Big Ten Challenge, pitting teams from both conferences against each other in the same weekend. For OU, it means they will face Wisconsin on Friday, Sept. 2 in Madison, Wis., and Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 3 in Iowa City, Iowa.
In addition, the Big 12 preseason poll was released by the conference office on Thursday and the Big 12 coaches picked the Sooners to finish eighth in the conference.
The Sooners return 19 letterwinners and nine starters from last year's 7-8-3 team that finished 10th in the Big 12. OU was slotted behind Texas A&M at No. 1, who received five of the 11 first place votes, Nebraska, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri and Oklahoma State. Following Oklahoma in the poll were Iowa State, Baylor and Texas Tech.
OU will open the 2005 regular season at Saint Louis on Friday, Aug. 26 and return to Norman on Sunday, Aug. 28 to host Arkansas on John Crain Field at the OU Soccer Complex.
