Sooner T&F Sends Competitors to Emporia

April 08, 2005 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. -- Co-head coach Jill Lancaster and 36 Sooner track and field student-athletes are in Emporia, Kan., preparing for Saturday's Euler State Farm/ESU Relays. The meet begins with field events at 10 a.m. and the running events are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. The meet is hosted by Emporia State University on the Zola Witten Track at Fran Welch Stadium.

This marks the second consecutive year for the Sooners to send a group of athletes to this meet. OU also has athletes competing the 78th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays this weekend.

The ESU Relays were successful for the Sooners last year. Cicely Williams and David Wright, a sophomore on the 2005 roster, gave the OU track teams a sweep of the hurdles while Cory Crosby in the long jump and the women's 1600-meter relay also picked up victories at the 2004 meet.

Williams won the women's 100 with a 14.15 after posting the fastest time in the preliminaries. Wright posted the third best qualifying time, then ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.54. Crosby won the long jump with a 23-11, then finished second in the triple jump with a 47-11.75. The women's 1600-meter relay won with a 4:02.01.

Then sophomore Jennifer Plank recorded a career best on her way to qualifying for the NCAA Regional in the pole vault. Plank cleared 12-3.5 to improve her career best by nearly 14 inches as she finished fourth in the competition. Kelsey Strecker made her second outdoor meet as a Sooner an impressive one, finishing third in the long jump, sixth in the 400 and seventh in the triple jump.

The Sooner teams will reunite next weekend as OU returns to Norman to host the 36th annual John Jacobs Invitational. The high school portion of the meet is set for Friday at the John Jacobs Complex while the collegians will hit the track on Saturday. The scheduled for Saturday has been pushed back with field events set to start at 11 a.m. and running events beginning at 4 p.m. The schedule change was made to give Sooner football fans attending the annual Red/White game an opportunity to attend the track meet as well.
