NORMAN, Okla. The national scope of Oklahoma's football program was evident again on signing day. Today the Sooners announced an incoming class of 27 players that hail from 13 different states.
“This is our most diverse and national class,” said Bob Stoops, whose six years have been characterized by strong signing days. “The continual national exposure with television and championship games has generated a lot of attention for this program and enabled us to attract prospects from all over the country.”
Stoops refuses to compare one signing class with another, but admitted, “If it's not the best one we've signed, it is sure one of them. We are very excited about the quality of this group.”
Of the 27 players, eight are from Texas, six from Oklahoma, two from Colorado and South Carolina and one each from Arizona, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio and Utah. Twenty-four are out of the high school ranks, while three (DE C.J. Ah You, DB Allen Patrick and OL Brandon Keith) are junior college products. Of the 27, 15 are listed as defensive players with 12 on offense. The defense includes three linebackers, five backs, four linemen and three ends. The offense includes six linemen, four receivers, one tight end and one fullback. “This class met our needs, and I am especially happy about the quantity and quality of the linemen on both sides of the ball,” Stoops said. “We needed to do well there and we did. “But it's not just limited to those positions. We did well everywhere. You look at the skill positions and the athletic ability is impressive.” Stoops also praised the academic preparedness of this signing class. “They're in very good shape in terms of eligibility,” he said. Director of football operations Merv Johnson, who monitors much of the team's off-field progress said, “I don't remember a class that came in with things in better order academically. And that goes back to before Coach Stoops got here.” The playing quality is obviously very high too. All of the recruiting services have the class ranked among the top 10 nationally and some have it among the top five. In all, OU took 17 players who were ranked among the state's top 10 in 11 different states.
