Sooners' Streak Ends with 3-0 Defeat at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The OU soccer team (No. 21 Soccer America) was handed its first Big 12 loss of the season by Kansas, 3-0, on Sunday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
The loss ends the Sooners 10-game unbeaten streak and drops OU to 11-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Big 12, while Kansas improves to 7-5-2 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play.
OU's only other loss this season came against then-No. 15 Wisconsin on Sept. 2, also on the road. When playing away from home this season, the Sooners are 3-2-1 (1-0 at neutral sites).
Kansas leads the all-time series, 7-3, and has won the last four meetings.

The Jayhawks entered Sunday's game after a 4-1 victory over Oklahoma State on Friday. Senior Jessica Smith tallied a hat trick to lead KU to the victory in that game.
On Sunday, Smith added another goal to her weekend total on the Jayhawks' second goal of the game scored at the 21:23 mark.
Two-time All-American Caroline Smith's goal in the 14th minute was the first goal of the contest.
"We made a couple of defensive mistakes early that they capitalized on, and that was the difference in the game," said OU head coach Randy Evans. "We made some adjustments at halftime and we really felt good about our second-half performance. Our offense played well in the final 45 minutes and created a lot of scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, we were unable to connect on those chances.
"Kansas has struggled at times this season but they looked like the defending Big 12 Champs today. They have a dangerous attack and outplayed us."
OU trailed 2-0 at halftime and 11-3 in the shot count. The Jayhawks also registered seven corner kicks in the first 45 minutes, opposite the Sooners' one.
The Sooner offense got back on track in the second session with seven shots and eight corner kicks, but still did not manage to score a goal for just the second time this season (at Wisconsin).
Michelle Rasmussen put KU up 3-0 with a second-half goal scored at the 59:03 mark.
OU finished the game with 10 shots to KU's 21. It is just the fourth game this season that OU trailed in the shot count (Wisconsin, Texas and Colorado). Kansas also held an 11-9 advantage in corner kicks.
The three goals allowed is a season high for sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols, who has played every minute in the Sooners' goal this season and made five saves on Sunday. Her counterpart, Julie Hanley, made two saves to post the shutout.
Seniors Lauren MacIver and Michelle Enos, sophomore Tenesha Duncan and freshman Tally Ward led OU with two shots each. Sunday's game was the first career appearance for Ward, who started the game after sitting out most of the season rehabilitating an injured knee.
Despite Ward's debut, OU was without one of its leading scorers on Sunday, sophomore Allyson Kucera. Kucera, who is second on the team in goals (5) and points (11), sat out the game against KU after receiving stitches on Friday following the Sooners 1-1 tie at Missouri.
The Sooners will return to the friendly confines of John Crain Field next weekend when they host Texas A&M on Friday, Oct. 14 (7 p.m.) and Baylor on Sunday at 1 p.m. OU is a perfect 8-0 at home this season.
"All season we have been taking one game at a time and Texas A&M is next," said Evans. "We need to get back to 100 percent and playing on our field and in front of our fans will help us get back on track. Next Friday against Texas A&M should be a great soccer game."
Despite the loss, OU remains atop the Big 12 standings, tied with Nebraska, Iowa State and Kansas with 10 points. Below is a look at the updated Big 12 standings.
