NORMAN, Okla.   The Oklahoma volleyball team fell in four games (23-30, 30-21, 30-26, 30-28) to Baylor Wednesday night inside the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.  The Bears defended their home court and improved to 10-9 overall and 2-6 in Big 12 play.  The Sooners, still trying to snap a nine-match losing streak, fell to 5-12 and 0-8 in league action.

“I thought it was an excellent effort by both squads tonight,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said.  “We had some very good rallies and I was very proud of our team's heart tonight.  Unfortunately, we had a few breakdown points and we weren't able to close out the match.”

OU took the first point of every game, but was unable to finish off each frame.  In the first set, OU jumped out to a 10-7 lead off a Hannah Sharp ace before Baylor took it away at 14-13 and went on a nine to two run.  The Sooners couldn't overcome the deficit and dropped the first game.

The Sooners rallied in the next game and claimed its largest lead of the second set at 21-11.  The Bears never got closer than a seven point margin as OU tied the match up at 1-1.

Once again, Oklahoma took advantage early in the third frame, taking an 8-3 lead thanks to a Joanna Schmitt kill.  The Bears quickly responded and went on an eight to two run and taking the lead.  The Sooners would get as close as a tie at 15-15, but Baylor responded and took game three of the match.

In a crucial fourth game the Sooners jumped out 5-2, but the Bears took their largest lead at 25-19 off a Baylor ace.  OU fought back and rattled of six straight points to even it up at 25 all.  Baylor took the two point advantage, but the Sooners responded and tied it up at 27-27.  The Bears recorded three of the game's final four points to win the fourth set and the match.

Despite a career night by junior transfer Eliane Santos, the Sooners were unable to hold on. The middle blocker was a nuisance to the Baylor offense as she posted a career-high 10 block assists, one shy of the OU four-game rally-scoring record, and collected eight digs.  Santos had an impressive night on the offensive side with 14 kills on a .300 clip while adding four aces, another career high.

Schmitt contributed 14 kills to the OU offense while recording six digs on the defensive end.

Sophomore Anna Stadel, coming off a career night against Texas A&M this past weekend, continued her stellar play and added 11 kills on a .333 clip.  The past three matches, the middle blocker is hitting at a clip of .439.  At the net, Stadel added five block assists.

Junior Anna Monsen made her first start of the season entering as the libero for the second game.  Monsen had an impressive outing and started the final two frames as well, collecting a season-high 12 digs.

“Anna is the reason we won the second game,” Restrepo said.  “She played outstanding tonight and I was very pleased with her effort.”

The Sooners will aim for their first Big 12 win of the season this Saturday, Oct. 15 as it hosts the Iowa State Cyclones at 3 p.m. inside the Howard McCasland Field House.  The Cyclones suffered a four-game loss to No. 24 Texas A&M Wednesday night.
