NORMAN, Okla. With the help of an 18-point, 13-rebound effort in a win over Texas on Saturday, Oklahoma junior forward Kevin Bookout was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. It is Bookout's second such honor in three weeks.
A 6-8, 259-pound native of Stroud, Okla., Bookout helped OU extend its winning streak to nine games by averaging 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in victories at Texas A&M (70-54) and versus Texas (64-60). Against the Longhorns, Bookout registered 12 of his 18 points and nine of his 13 rebounds in the second half to help the Sooners overcome a five-point halftime deficit. Eight of his rebounds against Texas were offensive. His three-point play with 1:56 remaining increased OU's lead from one to four.
On the season, Bookout is averaging 13.5 points and 7.1 rebounds a game while shooting a Big 12-best .630 from the field. He has shot .500 or better from the floor in 15 of his 16 games. He paced the conference in the category as a freshman in 2002-03 with a .587 mark and led the Sooners last year with a .516 figure.
Bookout is averaging 19.0 points and 10.3 rebounds a game in Big 12 play. He has three double-doubles in four league contests.
The player-of-the-week award was OU's sixth individual league honor of the season. Fellow juniors Taj Gray (three times) and Terrell Everett were named Big 12 Rookies of the Week earlier in the year. Bookout was named Big 12 Player of the Week Jan. 10.
Texas freshman Daniel Gibson was named this week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week.
Bookout and the Sooners host Oklahoma State Monday at 8 p.m.
