NORMAN, Okla. For the fourth time this season an Oklahoma men's basketball player has been named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week, and for the third time it is junior Taj Gray.
Gray, a 6-9, 235-pound forward from Wichita, Kan., averaged 18.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots in wins over No. 12 Connecticut (77-65 at home) and Baylor (65-61 on the road). He was 14-for-23 from the field (.609).
Against defending national champion Connecticut on Jan. 10, Gray turned in one of his best performances of the season. He scored 23 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. He also recorded four blocked shots. Gray followed with 13 points (on 5-for-6 field goal shooting), eight boards and three rejections on Saturday at Baylor.
On the season, Gray is averaging 15.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots a game while shooting .554 from the field. He ranks eighth in the Big 12 in scoring, second in rebounding, second in blocked shots and fourth in field goal percentage. His seven double-doubles are tied for the league lead.
Gray also earned Big 12 rookie of the week honors on Nov. 22 and Dec. 13 while fellow junior Terrell Everett was recognized with the same honor Nov. 29. Kevin Bookout was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Jan. 10.
The Sooners, 13-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12, play at Texas A&M on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CST before returning home for a pair of games against ranked opponents. OU will host Texas on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. before taking on visiting Oklahoma State on Monday at 8 p.m.
