Sooners, Mustangs Battle To A 2-2 Draw

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma soccer team played its second game in three days and came away with its second consecutive tie, 2-2, against SMU on Sunday at John Crain Field. Junior captain Lauren MacIver scored the game-tying goal in the 87th minute off an indirect kick just outside of the box on the right side. MacIver's blast was her first tally of the season and also resulted in senior captain Samantha Faulkner's first assist of 2004 after she tapped the ball to MacIver on the set play.
“I am pleased with our play and our level of development at this point in the season,” said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. “However, we had just a good a chance of being 2-0 right now. More importantly, we are playing well and it's hard to be happier with the options we have with our players.”

In a game that started off in similar fashion to Friday's 1-1 tie versus Saint Louis, the Sooners took the offensive and put the first goal on the board just 54 seconds into the game. The goal was set up by freshman Shana All as she recorded her second assist of the season. Just like Friday, All put perfect touch on a corner kick that found freshman Allyson Kucera in the box. Kucera proceeded to score her first collegiate goal on a header that found the back of the net.
“Shana has done a tremendous job out there,” said Evans. “I always tell our recruits when they come in that you have to be fit and strong. And she has done exactly that and is making an impact along with the other freshmen.”
The OU defense was able to hold SMU, which tallied four goals on Friday versus TCU, scoreless until the 34:02 mark when Marisa Cheida scored an unassisted goal, her second of the season. The shot from 30 yards out was hit hard past senior goalkeeper Catherine Wade, who started her second game of the season in net for OU but was relieved by freshman Jennifer Nichols at halftime for the second straight outing.
Nichols gave up a goal to the Mustangs just 1:15 into the second half as Krystal Bailey found the net with the help of Jill Heineman's assist. Trailing SMU in the shot category, 12-6, after the first 50 minutes of action, the Sooners went on a run of sorts, outshooting SMU 14-2 to end the game. The OU offense pressured goalie Amanda Clark with 13 shots in the second half and finally broke through on an SMU miscue. Controlling the ball in the SMU end of the field, OU's constant pressure produced an illegal pass from an SMU defender back to the goalkeeper. That play set up the indirect kick in which the Sooners scored on their second set play of the afternoon. A small tap from Faulkner set MacIver up for a blast that beat Clark with just 3:02 left in regulation.
MacIver almost broke through before that goal with a shot that would have placed perfectly in the upper 90 portion of the left side of the goal. Unfortunately for the Sooners, the powerful drive was miraculously deflected away at the last moment by Clark for a corner kick. For the second consecutive game, OU produced more chances on corner kicks than its opponents, with a 6-2 advantage on Sunday.

In the overtime sessions, SMU managed three shots to OU's one, but the momentum from the second half carried over into the extra time in OU's favor. In the game, OU had 20 shots, nine on goal, while SMU posted 16 shots, four on goal. Nichols' record stands at 0-0-2 as she recorded one save after facing six shots from the Mustangs. Wade made one save in her 45 minutes of action and her counterpart, Clark, saved seven in 110 minutes.
“After this first weekend, we know who can get the job done and who needs more work,” said Evans. “Those are questions that if you don't challenge yourself early on in the season, you don't get answered until after the first month of the season. That was one of the reasons we played with this lineup this weekend and I am glad we did.”
The Sooners (0-0-2) return to action on Friday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m. against TCU at John Crain Field. The Horned Frogs (1-1-0) split on the weekend, winning at Texas Tech, 2-0, on Sunday and dropping a 4-0 contest on Friday to SMU in Fort Worth. The Sooners will then travel to Fayetteville, Ark, to take on the Lady Razorbacks on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m.
