NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the ESPN/USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll that was released today. The Sooners are rated behind No. 1 USC and are then followed by LSU, Georgia and Miami (Fla.), among the top five, respectively.
The Sooners report to Norman for preseason camp on Aug. 8. They open the 2004 campaign on Sept. 4 when they host Bowling Green at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The Sooners garnered 12 of the 61 first-place votes. USC got 44, while the other five went to LSU.
“I appreciate the fact that other coaches feel we're in a position to compete for the national championship," said OU head coach Bob Stoops, who is 55-11 after five years in Norman. "We hope to earn our way to such a lofty position at the end of the season. At this point in the year, the polls don't mean a whole lot and we'll all have a chance to go play for it. That's all we've ever asked for and that's what we look forward to now.”

Oklahoma has won seven national championships, including the 2000 crown. The Sooners also played for last year's national title in the Nokia Sugar Bowl, a game won by LSU, 21-14.
OU's 48 victories are tops in college football since 2000, while the Sooners' winning percentage of .888 during that time ranks No. 2 to Miami.
