Sampson Signs Godbold to Letter of Intent

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team added depth to its backcourt by signing Oklahoma City product David Godbold to a national letter of intent, head coach Kelvin Sampson announced on Monday.  Godbold, a 6-5, 200-pound guard from Douglass High School, was named to The Oklahoman's All-City Team and to the Oklahoma Coaches Association's All-State Team.

During his senior season, Godbold averaged 24.0 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game as the Douglass Trojans went 18-8 and made the Class 4A state semifinals.

Godbold will likely redshirt the 2004-05 season, according to Sampson.  Originally planning to be a walk-on, Godbold was offered a scholarship by Oklahoma thanks to the NCAA's recent abolishment of the 5/8 rule, which stated that a team could not sign more than five players in any given year and not more than eight players in two consecutive years.

“I think David will prove to be a great investment,” said Sampson.  “He's a kid who has a ton of potential.  He's long and athletic and he can really shoot the basketball.  David will help us win games.  He needs to get bigger and stronger, but he has a high ceiling and he'll get better.  He had a great senior season but kind of flew under the radar.  The more we watched him the more we liked him.

“He's going to be a tremendous asset to our program, both on and off the court, because of how good a person and student he is.”

Terry Long, Godbold's head coach at Douglass High School, said, “David was an outstanding player for us.  Without him we would not have had the success we had the last two years.  He is a complete player.  He shoots extremely well, he handles the ball and he is a tremendous athlete.  He's very active and can rebound.  I put him at the point in crunch situations so he could have the ball in his hands and make a play.”

Added Long, “On top of everything else, he's one of the most pleasant kids I've ever coached.  I didn't have one problem with him.”

Godbold joins junior college All-Americans Taj Gray and Terrell Everett, and prep school standout Longar Longar, as members of OU's current recruiting class.
