The Oklahoma soccer team concluded the road portion of the spring schedule with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., on Sunday, April 4.
The teams played three 30 minutes halves and despite creating the majority of the scoring opportunities the Sooners were unable to come out on top with an inexperienced lineup on the field.
OU started Hollee Fink in goal, her first appearance for the Sooners. Fink was shaky at first but her decision making improved throughout the game as she put together a solid performance.
"Overall it was a good trip and we continue to answer questions about this team," said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. "This spring is creating some positive and some negative answers. It is not a surprise that with an inexperienced lineup on the field in the spring, that we have given up more goals than we have scored."
Both teams started off slow with neither team creating a real scoring threat but in the second 30-minute half the Sooners took control of the game despite giving up two goals in the period. OU created five scoring chances but were unsuccessful on capitalizing on those opportunities.
"Despite a slow start, I am thrilled about the way we played," added Evans. "Our defense continues to improve on their organization and our attack is taking shape. Up front, Andrea Hurley has adjusted quickly to playing forward and Lauren MacIver continues to dominate the midfield. On the defensive side of the ball, Christy Kenkel is playing better than she did in the fall and Jenny Jones is proving with her hard work that she deserves a spot on the field in the fall.
"When you look at the scores of our games you can be disapointed but the point of the spring is to get to play the players that were lacking experience last season. We have the opportunity to play everyone on this team throughout this offseason schedule and we are finding out who will help us off the bench as we look to continue last year's success in the upcoming fall."
The Sooners have one remaining scheduled game in the spring as they face Tulsa Soccer 86 (U-19) at John Crain Field on April 24 at 10 a.m.
