NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma soccer team kicked off the spring season with a doubleheader in College Station, Texas, on March 7. The Sooners lost to the club team, Dallas Sting, 0-1 and played Texas A&M less than two hours later falling 0-4. In the second half of the contest with the Aggies, OU played nine players that did not see action the previous fall season.
"This was a good experience for us," said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. "We were able to put some people out there that we have not seen in action and saw what they could or could not do. Lauren MacIver played extremely well and is looking even better than she did in the fall."
Junior goalkeeper Catherine Wade did not see action in either of the Sooners' contests and junior Keara Jones started in net for OU.
The Sooners first two spring games scheduled on Feb. 29 in Austin, Texas, got rained out and the Sooners are looking to fill the schedule with a couple more games for the spring. The Sooners are scheduled to play three more games to warm up for the upcoming fall season. OU is coming off a year that saw it make its first ever NCAA appearance while posting an 8-6-5 mark.
“I'm excited about getting this spring schedule,” said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans. “If this were the fall I'd be a wreck because with the little practice we have had, we are not ready. But the spring is different all together. It's just as well to practice what you need to work on against the best competition out there. We have a lot of players that didn't get an opportunity to play last fall that will end up playing significant minutes and even starting this spring. It's a proving ground for those players and an opportunity to sharpen the skills of others.”
Two spring dates remain open for the Sooners with opponents to be determined at a later date. One of those matches is the Sooners' lone home game of the spring season. That match is scheduled for April 24 at John Crain Field in Norman.
